6-Day Luxury Gorillas & Lake Kivu Retreat — Sankofa Africa Safaris

Rwanda is one of the most unexpectedly beautiful countries in Africa — a land of mist-draped volcanoes, thousand-terraced hills, and a forest that harbours one of the planet's most stirring wildlife encounters. This six-day luxury journey is designed for those who want the full depth of that experience without compromise: mountain gorilla trekking at Volcanoes National Park, quiet cultural afternoons in the Rwandan highlands, and an unhurried retreat along the glittering shores of Lake Kivu — one of Africa's Great Rift Valley lakes — where wellness, romance, and scenery converge in complete serenity. Intimate, slow-paced, and entirely private, this is Rwanda at its most refined, arranged from arrival to departure by Sankofa Africa Safaris.

Scenic Drive Arrival

You are warmly welcomed at Kigali International Airport by your private Sankofa Africa Safaris guide — a quiet, organised presence who takes care of everything from this moment forward, so that Rwanda can begin doing what it does best: astonishing you. The drive north from the capital is an introduction in itself. Rwanda's landscape unfolds in extraordinary intimacy — an endless succession of perfectly terraced hillsides, banana groves, brick-red earth roads threading between smallholdings, and the occasional elevated viewpoint from which the true scale of the country's topography reveals itself. The Rwandan countryside has a quality of lushness that feels almost operatic, each hill replaced by another, deeper green, until the skyline ahead gradually fills with the unmistakable dark profiles of the Virunga Volcanoes — the ancient volcanic chain that forms the backdrop of your first three nights.

Arrival at your luxury lodge on the edge of Volcanoes National Park is a moment of complete transition: the lodge sits within the mountain forest's breathing zone, where mist moves through the treetops in the late afternoon and the air carries the clean, cool scent of altitude rainforest. The evening is yours entirely — a fireside armchair and a glass of something warming, a short dusk walk along the forest boundary guided by the lodge naturalist, or simply the deep pleasure of settling into surroundings of exceptional beauty with the most significant wildlife encounter of the journey — gorilla trekking — positioned exactly where it should be: ahead of you.

Gorillas Forest Trek Spa & Rest
Gorilla Trekking Permit: USD 1,500 per person — included in your package price. Permits are non-refundable and subject to availability. You will be assigned to a specific habituated gorilla family based on your fitness level and trekking preference.

An early breakfast precedes the drive to Volcanoes National Park headquarters, where your ranger group assembles for a detailed briefing from the lead guide: the rules of engagement with gorillas (maintain a minimum seven-metre distance, no flash photography, turn away if you feel a cough coming), the signs that indicate a gorilla family's recent passage, and a frank explanation of what the next few hours may hold. The trek itself — through bamboo groves, dense afromontane rainforest, and the volcanic soil that gives the Virungas their distinctive character — may take between one and six hours depending on how far the gorillas have moved since their overnight nest. Distance from the trailhead is irrelevant: you go as far as they have gone, because the hour with them that awaits at the end is categorically unlike anything else available in African wildlife travel.

Mountain gorillas are the most endangered of the gorilla subspecies, and the hour spent in the presence of a habituated family — observing a silverback's massive and unhurried authority, watching juveniles chase each other through the undergrowth, or meeting the calm, appraising gaze of a female who has simply decided to sit down and look at you — is profoundly moving in a way that is almost impossible to adequately communicate in advance. Conservation research and community-based protection programmes have brought Rwanda's mountain gorilla population back from the brink of extinction, and the weight of that context — the extraordinary work it has taken to make this hour possible — makes the encounter far richer than a simple wildlife sighting. Return to the lodge for lunch, and the afternoon is reserved entirely for rest: spa treatments, yoga, quiet reading in the forest air, or nothing at all.

Cultural Village Wellness Nature Walk

This day is intentionally unhurried — designed around whatever you need it to be. After the physical and emotional intensity of gorilla trekking, many guests find that Day 3 becomes one of the most quietly satisfying of the entire journey: the pressure of the 'big experience' has passed, and what remains is simply Rwanda — extraordinary in its everyday details. A guided walk along the forest edge offers the opportunity to observe the park's rich birdlife at close range, identify medicinal plants used in traditional Rwandan healing practice, and understand the forest boundary dynamics — the fine line between protected wilderness and the farming communities whose land wraps around Volcanoes National Park on every side.

A visit to a local cultural village provides a window into contemporary Rwandan rural life and its deep relationship with the volcanic landscape: traditional intore dance, the weaving of agaseke peace baskets (one of Rwanda's most recognised craft traditions), and guided conversations — through your interpreter — about how local communities participate in gorilla conservation through revenue sharing and employment as trackers and rangers. For those who prefer to remain closer to the lodge, the Dian Fossey Exhibition traces the life, research, and legacy of the primatologist whose work at Karisoke Research Centre in the Virungas transformed global understanding of mountain gorilla behaviour and catalysed the conservation movement that continues today. The afternoon is free for the lodge's luxury amenities, and the Virunga peaks, if the mist allows, make their most dramatic appearance at dusk.

Panorama Drive Lake Kivu Sunset Cruise

Departure from Volcanoes National Park opens the second movement of this journey — the shift from highland forest drama to the serene, luminous world of Lake Kivu. The road south traverses the Congo-Nile Ridge, one of Rwanda's most spectacular driving routes: a high spine of forested hills that forms the continental watershed between the Congo and Nile river systems, with staggering views in both directions — to the west, the green valleys of the DRC; to the east, the terraced hills of interior Rwanda falling away toward the lake. Photo stops along this route reveal a landscape of almost absurd beauty, with tea plantations carpeting the upper hillsides and the lake itself appearing gradually through the descending vegetation as a vast, still expanse of silver-blue water framed by dark green hills on the opposite Congolese shore.

Arrival at your lakeside luxury lodge — positioned directly above the water with uninterrupted views across the lake's full width — is a definitive change of register. The volcanic highlands have given way to something gentler, warmer, and more meditative. The afternoon culminates in a sunset boat cruise across the lake's calm surface, passing small inhabited islands, local fishing pirogues returning with their catch, and the shifting light display that Lake Kivu performs every evening as the sun descends behind the Congolese hills — a spectacle of gold, copper, and deep rose reflected in water of extraordinary clarity. Dinner is served at the lodge as the stars appear above the lake in complete silence.

Boat Cruise Spa Island Village

Lake Kivu — one of Africa's Great Rift Valley lakes, sharing its shores between Rwanda and the DRC — is one of the continent's most visually striking and least-visited bodies of water. At 1,460 metres above sea level, its climate is warm without being oppressive, its surface calm and navigable, and its island-dotted shoreline rich in the quiet detail of lakeside Rwandan life. The morning offers the choice of a guided kayak along the lake's sheltered bay — one of the most peaceful ways to experience the water's scale and clarity at close quarters — or a motorised boat cruise to one or more of Kivu's inhabited islands, where small communities live in close relationship with the lake: fishing at dawn, drying their catch on wooden racks in the morning sun, and conducting a material life that has changed relatively little despite Rwanda's extraordinary national transformation of the past three decades.

The afternoon is completely reserved for the lodge's wellness facilities — which on Lake Kivu are genuinely exceptional, with spa treatments using locally sourced volcanic minerals and herbal preparations that draw on the Rwandan highlands' medicinal plant tradition. For couples or honeymooners, this day is the centrepiece of the journey: the combination of extraordinary lakeside scenery, the intimacy of a private lodge setting, the absence of any programme or obligation, and the cumulative effect of five days of rare and meaningful experience creates a quality of presence that is difficult to find anywhere else. A private dinner on the lake terrace — wine, fresh tilapia from the lake, the hill lights of Goma reflected distantly across the water — closes the day and the substantive portion of this journey in the best possible manner.

Kigali Departure

A final morning breakfast beside the lake — the water catching the early light, fishing boats already out on the far shore — before the return drive to Kigali. The route back to the capital is a pleasant and panoramic one, and depending on your departure time, your guide can arrange a stop in Kigali for a visit to the Kigali Genocide Memorial (a deeply significant and sobering site that contextualises Rwanda's extraordinary national recovery), the vibrant Kimironko craft market, or simply a quiet final lunch in one of the city's excellent restaurants before the drive to Kigali International Airport. Rwanda is one of those places that requires no explanation for why people return — the gorillas, the hills, the lake, and the extraordinary energy of a country in the process of becoming something remarkable tend to leave a very specific kind of unfinished feeling, as though the journey has ended slightly before you were ready. Your Sankofa Africa Safaris guide accompanies you to departures, and the expedition ends here.

Important Precautions & Travel Notes
!
Minimum age for gorilla trekking is 15 years. Moderate physical fitness is required — treks can last between one and six hours over uneven, sometimes steep volcanic terrain. Waterproof hiking boots, a rain jacket, and long trousers are essential.
!
No trekking is permitted if you have flu, a cough, or any infectious illness on the day of the trek. Your guide will advise on the rescheduling process if this situation arises. Photography is permitted throughout — flash is strictly prohibited at all times.
!
Weather changes quickly in rainforest zones — even during the dry season, cold mornings and afternoon rain are common at altitude. Pack in layers and always carry rain gear on trek days.
!
Wildlife rules and ranger instructions must be followed at all times without exception — for the safety of both guests and the gorilla families, every protocol exists for a reason and is non-negotiable in the field.
!
Health essentials: Yellow fever vaccination is mandatory for entry into Rwanda. Malaria prophylaxis is recommended — consult a travel health clinic at least 4–6 weeks before departure. Comprehensive travel and medical evacuation insurance is strongly advised for this journey.
!
Gorilla trekking permits are issued in limited numbers each day and are non-refundable. Sankofa Africa Safaris secures your permit at time of booking confirmation — availability is not guaranteed and early booking is strongly recommended, particularly for peak season travel.
