En route to Kigali

Upon arrival at Kigali International Airport, you are met by your professional Sankofa Africa Safaris guide and given a warm welcome briefing before departing eastwards toward Akagera National Park. The drive takes approximately 2.5 hours, passing through rural Rwandan communities, rolling green hills, and open agricultural landscapes — the country's famous "land of a thousand hills" visible in every direction.

You enter the park in time for a scenic game drive en route to the lodge, where the terrain flattens into wide open savannah, acacia woodland, and glittering lake edges. Expect your first sightings of giraffes moving elegantly across the plains, zebras grazing in large herds, topis, impalas, Cape buffalo, and a rich variety of waterbirds along the shores of Lake Ihema. You arrive at the lodge in the late afternoon with time to relax on the veranda, watching the sun dip over the savannah or hippos floating in the lake below.

Overnight: Akagera National Park

After an early breakfast, you set off for a full-day game drive across Akagera's diverse ecosystems — sweeping open plains, dense acacia woodlands, papyrus swamps, and the chain of lakes running along the park's eastern boundary. Your driver-guide's expertise and knowledge of the park's animal movements maximise your chances of sightings throughout the day.

Search for lions resting in the shade of acacia trees, elephants moving in family groups towards water, black rhinos in the dense thornbush (one of Rwanda's most celebrated conservation success stories), giraffes browsing the treetops, and leopards resting on exposed rocky outcrops. A picnic lunch is served inside the park, keeping you in prime wildlife territory throughout the afternoon. Return to the lodge as the light turns golden and hippos begin their evening chorus on the lake.

Overnight: Akagera National Park

The morning begins before sunrise with a golden-hour game drive — the best time for predator activity and dramatic photography as the light sweeps across the savannah. Lions are most active at dawn, and this session frequently delivers the safari's most memorable encounters before the heat of the day sends animals into the shade. Return to the lodge for a full breakfast and a period of rest by the pool or on the veranda.

The afternoon brings a completely different perspective of Akagera — a boat safari on Lake Ihema, one of East Africa's most rewarding and relaxed wildlife experiences. The lake holds enormous populations of Nile hippos and Nile crocodiles, observable from very close range from the water's surface, while elephants and buffalo wade at the shoreline, fish eagles call from overhanging trees, and a spectacular variety of waterbirds — African spoonbills, pelicans, open-billed storks, goliath herons, kingfishers, and the unmistakable shoebill (in the papyrus zones) — works the shallows alongside the boat. A truly unique and peaceful counterpoint to the morning's game drive energy.

Overnight: Akagera National Park

After a final relaxed breakfast at the Akagera lodge, you check out and exit the park westward, heading back towards Kigali. En route, you stop at a working coffee plantation and processing centre — one of Rwanda's most rewarding cultural experiences and a perfect window into the agricultural heritage that underpins the country's economy and international identity.

Rwanda produces some of the world's finest single-origin arabica coffee, and this visit takes you through the entire journey from cherry to cup: walking the plantation rows with a local farmer, witnessing the wet processing method at the washing station, learning about fermentation, drying, and grading, and concluding with a guided cupping session where you taste the different roast profiles and experience firsthand what makes Rwandan coffee so distinctive. The interaction with local farmers and cooperative members adds depth and genuine human connection to the experience. You arrive in Kigali in the late afternoon for check-in, a city dinner, and a briefing on tomorrow's final city highlights.

Breakfast Lunch — Dinner —
Overnight: Kigali

After a final Rwandan breakfast, your remaining morning in Kigali offers time for a short city experience before your onward flight. Kigali is one of Africa's most remarkably clean, safe, and well-organised capitals — a city that consistently surprises first-time visitors with its beauty, energy, and ambition. Depending on your departure time, your guide can take you to Kimironko Market — the city's largest open-air market and the best place in Rwanda for authentic crafts including imigongo geometric cow-dung art panels and agaseke peace baskets, Rwanda's UNESCO-recognised intricately woven sweetgrass tradition — or to one of Kigali's scenic hilltop viewpoints for a final sweeping view across the city's dramatic ridgeline.

Your Sankofa Africa Safaris driver-guide transfers you to Kigali International Airport in comfortable time for your departure, bringing four days of open savannah, hippo-filled lakes, Rwanda's extraordinary conservation story, and the finest coffee in Africa to a close.
