3 Days Shoebill & Wetland Photography Experience
3-Day Shoebill & Wetland Photography Experience
Two boat trips through the papyrus channels of Mabamba Bay to find and photograph the shoebill, with a birding guide beside you. The wetland is 45 minutes from Entebbe International Airport.

Tour Overview
This trip is built around one bird, the shoebill, in Mabamba Bay Wetlands on the shore of Lake Victoria. You go out on the water twice on the same day, once at dawn and once in the late afternoon, so you shoot in both the soft morning mist and the warm evening light. A birding and photography guide is with you throughout. On the last morning you meet the community that protects the wetland. It suits photographers chasing a frame and birders adding a species to their list.
Trip Highlights
Shoebill up close
You photograph it from the canoe at close range. Your guide handles the boat so you get the best angle without disturbing the bird.
Two boat trips in one day
Dawn mist and still water in the morning. Warm, low light from about 3:30 pm. Same channels, very different pictures.
Botanical Gardens walk
A guided birding walk on arrival day. African fish eagles, grey parrots and great blue turacos are some of the birds to look for.
Community conservation visit
Meet the guides and conservation workers who monitor shoebill nesting sites and look after the wetland.

Day-by-Day Itinerary
Arrival in Entebbe
Our representative meets you at Entebbe International Airport and drives you to Nkima Forest Lodge, an eco-lodge in the forest near Lake Victoria, about 45 minutes away. Staying here makes tomorrow's early start easy.
Depending on your arrival time, you spend the afternoon on a guided birding walk in the Entebbe Botanical Gardens. The gardens cover 40 hectares on a quiet peninsula of Lake Victoria. Look out for African fish eagles, grey parrots, blue-spotted wood doves, great blue turacos, black-and-white-casqued hornbills and shining-blue kingfishers along the shore.
Back at the lodge before dusk, your guide briefs you on tomorrow: boat etiquette, camera settings for low light over water, and how the shoebill behaves at different times of day. Then dinner and an early night.
- Airport pick-up and transfer to the lodge
- Guided birding walk, Entebbe Botanical Gardens
- Photography briefing and dinner
Mabamba Swamp: Morning & Afternoon Boat Trips
You leave the lodge before sunrise for the Mabamba landing site on the edge of the swamp. A local swamp guide and a traditional motorised canoe are waiting. Your guide has worked these papyrus channels for years and knows where the shoebill spends its time.
The morning trip is timed for first light. Mist over the channels softens the light, and the still water gives clean reflections of papyrus and sky. Your guide poles quietly through the narrow channels, reading the water and listening for movement. The aim is the shoebill: a bird up to 1.4 metres tall, standing motionless on a floating papyrus mat with its bill pointed at the water. You photograph it from the canoe at close range. Your guide positions the boat for the best angle against the light and background, and keeps far enough back that the bird stays calm.
The channels offer plenty besides the shoebill. Malachite kingfishers sit on papyrus stems at eye level, African jacanas walk across lily pads, purple herons stalk the shallows and pied kingfishers hover overhead. You may also see a sitatunga at the papyrus edge.
Back at the lodge you have a hot lunch and a rest. Use the time to review your images, upload files and talk composition with your guide. The afternoon trip leaves at about 3:30 pm and aims for the warm light of the last two hours before dark. The shoebill is often hunting then, so you can add action frames to the morning's portraits. The canoe returns at dusk, and dinner is at the lodge.

- Lunch, rest and image review at the lodge
- Afternoon boat trip in the golden hour
Community Conservation Walk & Departure
After a relaxed breakfast at the lodge, you visit the Mabamba Wetlands Community Conservation Centre. The local guides and conservation workers there explain their work: monitoring shoebill nesting sites, managing sustainable fishing in the wetland, and teaching nearby villages why the swamp matters.
A short guided walk along the wetland edge follows. Your guide points out the plants that make up the papyrus ecosystem and explains the pressures on it, including farmland creeping in and invasive water hyacinth.
Back at the lodge you have an early lunch and time to sort your images and pack. Our driver then takes you to Entebbe International Airport for your flight or onward safari.
