3 Days Lake Mburo Wildlife & Ankole Culture
3-Day Lake Mburo Wildlife & Ankole Culture
A walking safari, a boat trip on Lake Mburo, a game drive and an afternoon with a family of Ankole cattle keepers. Just 3 to 4 hours from Kampala.

Tour Overview
Lake Mburo is a compact savannah park in western Uganda, a smaller and gentler safari than Murchison Falls or Queen Elizabeth. Zebras and impalas graze on open plains fringed with acacia, and hippos gather in the lake's quiet bays. In three days you take a game drive, a ranger-led walk and a boat trip, and spend an afternoon with a Bahima family who keep Ankole long-horned cattle. The park is 3 to 4 hours from Kampala, so it works as a first safari in Uganda or as a short trip when time is limited.
Trip Highlights
Ranger-led walking safari
Lake Mburo is one of the few Ugandan parks that allows walks. You spend 2 to 3 hours on foot at first light.
Boat safari on the lake

Meet a Bahima family, watch a milking demonstration and share a meal around an outdoor hearth.
Close to Kampala
The drive takes 3 to 4 hours each way, so there are no domestic flights to book.

Day-by-Day Itinerary
Kampala or Entebbe to Lake Mburo
Your driver-guide leaves Kampala or Entebbe in the morning and heads southwest on the Masaka highway. City traffic gives way to rolling hills, banana groves and red-earth farmland. You stop at several viewpoints for photos of the countryside and the terraced hills of the Ankole region. You may also pass herds of Ankole long-horned cattle with their herders.
You reach Lake Mburo National Park in the early afternoon and check in at your lodge, a midrange property that works with the local community. Then you head out on a game drive across the open plains that slope down to the lake's northern shore. Lake Mburo is known for its zebra herds, which often mix with impalas, topi, eland, warthogs and buffalo. Your guide scans the acacia trees for leopard as the drive follows the lake edge, and hippos begin to surface in the shallows as the day cools.
The day ends with a sundowner at a viewpoint over the water, then dinner at the lodge and a briefing for the early start tomorrow.
- Morning drive from Kampala or Entebbe, with photo stops
- Afternoon game drive on the plains above the lake
- Sundowner at a lake viewpoint, then dinner
Walking Safari & Ankole Cultural Visit
You leave the lodge at first light for a walking safari, before the heat builds. A Uganda Wildlife Authority ranger leads you on foot for 2 to 3 hours through acacia woodland and lakeshore grassland, reading tracks and naming birdsong. On foot, everything feels closer. You might see a hippo grazing 40 metres ahead on a game trail at dawn, a herd of zebras picking through the scrub just upwind, or a dung beetle rolling its ball. A family of warthogs may trot away with their tails held upright.
After the walk you have a full breakfast at the lodge. In the afternoon your guide takes you to a nearby Ankole cattle farm, where a Bahima family welcomes you. The Bahima are the semi-nomadic cattle keepers of the Banyankole people, and their culture has been built around the long-horned Ankole cattle for centuries. The horns can span more than two metres, and the cattle are calm and easy to photograph. You see a traditional milking demonstration and learn how fermented milk (ekibeezi) is prepared in a gourd, the centre of the Bahima diet.
Your hosts prepare a shared meal of local dishes, including roasted meat, matoke, millet and fresh milk, eaten around an outdoor hearth. Craft demonstrations of beadwork and basket weaving finish the afternoon. As the sun lowers, you can join an optional photography session on the lakeshore, for evening light on the water, cattle returning to their homestead and wading birds working the shallows.
- Dawn walking safari with a UWA ranger
- Visit to a Bahima Ankole cattle farm
- Community meal and craft demonstrations
Boat Safari & Return to Kampala
The last morning starts on the water. The early boat safari is the most productive wildlife outing in the park. At sunrise, mist rises off the lake, fish eagles call from the papyrus, and hippos that grazed on the plains overnight are heading back to the water. Your motorised boat, with life jackets provided, moves slowly along the shore and into the bays where hippo pods gather. You photograph them from the water at close range, at eye level.
Nile crocodiles bask on the banks and sandbars. Fish eagles perch above the shoreline, and grey and goliath herons stalk the shallows. The papyrus beds hide birds such as the African finfoot, lesser jacana and papyrus gonolek.
Back at the lodge you have a full breakfast, then pack and check out. You can make an optional stop at a local craft market near the park gate, where handwoven baskets, decorated gourds and beadwork are made by the Ankole communities around the park, and purchases go directly to local artisans. The drive back to Kampala or Entebbe takes 3 to 4 hours on the same highland route.
