6 Days Rwenzori Foothills & Coffee Trail
6-Day Rwenzori Foothills & Coffee Trail
Six days in the Rwenzori foothills with a Bakonzo farming community: coffee from farm to cup, a full-day guided hike, craft and cooking workshops, and a conservation morning.

Tour Overview
The Rwenzori foothills in western Uganda are Bakonzo farming country, where coffee has been grown for generations on the rich slopes below the mountain. This six-day trip is based at a community eco-lodge and is built around the people who live here. You work with a coffee cooperative, hike with a local guide, learn crafts and cooking from local women, and spend a morning on a conservation project.
Trip Highlights
Hands-On Coffee
Pick, pulp, dry, roast and cup Arabica with the cooperative that grows it.
Foothill Hike
A full day through montane forest and past waterfalls with a local guide.
Crafts & Cooking
Weave, dye and cook alongside local women, then share a community supper.
Conservation Morning

Day-by-Day Itinerary
Kampala → Rwenzori Foothills
Leave Kampala early, ideally by 7:00 am, and drive west through the tea-growing highlands around Mubende into escarpment country. The air cools as the road climbs, and the Rwenzori range shows above the cloud on a clear afternoon. Your driver-guide gives you background on the landscape and communities as you go.
You reach the community eco-lodge in time for lunch. It's simple and well placed, with views over coffee and banana farms toward the mountain. In the afternoon a local host takes you on a short walk around the lodge and nearby village, and over dinner your guide goes through the days ahead and what to bring.
- Drive from Kampala
- Eco-lodge check-in and lunch
- Orientation walk and dinner briefing
Coffee Cooperative Day
Spend the day with the local farming cooperative. In the morning you follow Arabica from tree to drying table: choosing ripe cherries by colour, hand-picking, and pulping the fruit away from the parchment-covered bean. The beans then dry on raised wooden beds in the open sun.
In the afternoon cooperative members run a roasting and cupping session. You compare light and dark roasts side by side and taste the lots with the farmers, who will tell you plainly which hillside did best this season. They're also open about the economics of small-scale farming, and that conversation is often the best part of the day.
The evening is free for photographing village life and, on clear days, the light on the western slopes.
- Coffee farm visit
- Roasting and cupping session
- Free evening
Guided Foothill Hike
A local guide leads you into the lower Rwenzori slopes. The trail climbs from the village through coffee and banana farms into montane forest, where it gets cooler and the light turns green under the canopy. Waterfalls along the route range from small cascades over mossy boulders to bigger falls with their own spray and ferns.
When the cloud allows, viewpoints higher up open out across the rift valley toward the hills of the DRC. Lodge staff pack a picnic lunch and your guide carries it up. The walk back is unhurried, with time for forest photography and bird watching. The Rwenzori turaco is one of the birds your guide will help you look for.
This is not a summit attempt and doesn't reach the snow line, so no mountaineering equipment is needed.
- Full-day guided hike
- Waterfalls and forest viewpoints
- Picnic lunch and bird watching
Crafts, Cooking & Community Supper
The day is spent with local artisans and women's groups. In the morning you visit the craft workshop, where weavers make baskets and mats from locally harvested fibres. A natural-dye workshop uses plant extracts from the mountain forest. You do the work yourself: weaving a small section on the loom and mixing dye.
In the afternoon you cook with local women. Dishes follow the Bakonzo farming year, such as matoke with groundnut sauce, slow-cooked beans with mountain herbs and steamed maize in banana leaf. You make them alongside your hosts rather than watching.
In the evening there's music, singing and dance in the lodge compound, and you can try the instruments. The community supper afterwards is informal and usually runs late.
- Weaving and natural-dye workshop
- Cooking with local women
- Music, dance and community supper
Conservation Project & Free Afternoon
In the morning you join the lodge's community partners on their watershed restoration and reforestation work. The local youth conservation group runs the session, and the task depends on the season. It could be planting trees above the farm line, clearing invasive plants from stream banks, or working on community water catchments. The youth leaders are frank about what has been achieved and how much is left to do.
The afternoon is yours. Your guide can lead a photography walk in the hour before sunset, when mist starts to come down the slopes and the farms catch the light. Or you can simply relax on the lodge veranda with the view of the mountain. Dinner at the lodge is the group's last together.
- Tree planting or watershed restoration
- Free afternoon
- Optional photography walk
Return to Kampala / Entebbe
After breakfast there's time for a last walk through the village, or a final cup of cooperative coffee on the veranda. You can buy beans directly from the farmers you've met. After your farewells you drive back to Kampala or Entebbe with your driver-guide, stopping at viewpoints or roadside craft stalls as time allows. You arrive in the afternoon or evening, as arranged at booking.
- Final village walk or coffee tasting
- Drive back to Kampala or Entebbe

Before You Book
Good to Know
- Driving: Kampala to the foothills takes 5–6 hours depending on traffic and roads. Leave by 7:00 am on Day 1 so you arrive for lunch and the orientation walk.
- Weather: The Rwenzori gets rain through the year, so bring rain gear and a waterproof cover for your camera. The hike goes ahead in all but severe weather, and your guide decides on the day.
- Fitness: Easy to moderate. The hike is a steady climb on uneven ground, so wear comfortable shoes with ankle support. No mountaineering equipment is needed.
- Photography: Misty mornings and warm late-afternoon light over the coffee farms are the best conditions. A telephoto lens helps for birds, and a waterproof dry bag is worth bringing.
- Health: Yellow fever vaccination is required for entry to Uganda. Malaria prophylaxis is recommended, so see a travel clinic before you go. Comprehensive travel and medical insurance is strongly advised.
- Where you'll stay: A simple community eco-lodge with views over the farms toward the mountain.
