His passion for preserving and promoting African culture is at the heart of his mission, making Sankofa Afrika Tours a bridge between the world and Africa’s authentic stories.

Odama Sam Asega’s life began in the depths of extreme poverty, born as the eldest child in the impoverished Kampala slums of Namuwongo. Tragedy struck early with the loss of his father, leaving him and his siblings to navigate the harsh realities of life without a primary caregiver. As a young boy, Odama assumed the role of a father figure, supporting his family while shouldering responsibilities beyond his age. From a tender age, he faced illness, often battling pneumonia, malaria due to the poor conditions under which they survived, that weren’t fit for an infant. His mother’s tales of his miraculous escapes from death countless times in infancy since there wasn’t even money for proper medical care, this reinforced his belief in a higher purpose guiding his path. Despite the challenges, Odama displayed remarkable resilience, taking on odd jobs in neighboring communities to in order to provide for his family’s basic needs. At some point, he had to temporarily quit his school to ensure his siblings’ wellbeing and full support, a testament to selflessness and unwavering commitment to family.

Work Life

Working with organizations like Baylor Uganda, Red-cross and Delph Skills Training Center, he channeled his knowledge and experiences into meaningful action, advocating for the rights and wellbeing of marginalized youth. Through initiatives focused on skill-building, Robotics, education, and creating awareness on dangers of early marriages and drug abuse, empowering young girls and boys to become agents of change within their communities and living their God purposed meaningful life. In addition to advocacy, Odama’s journey took an entrepreneurial turn when he ventured into the tourism industry. Drawing from the diverse experiences he had gained as a tour guide, driver, and reservations officer for various tourism companies, he found inspiration to establish his own company, Sankofa Afrika Tours & Travel, from scratch. His entrepreneurial spirit, born from the challenges he faced, exemplifies his resilience and determination to carve out a better future for himself and others. Reflecting on his journey, Odama acknowledges the challenges he has overcome and the profound impact they have had on shaping him into the person he is today. Despite the hardships, he wears his story with pride and gratitude, recognizing that each trial has contributed to his growth and resilience. His journey from poverty to purpose stands as a beacon of hope and inspiration for others facing similar or even worse struggles, demonstrating that with perseverance and determination, anything is possible with tireless efforts, no obstacle is insurmountable, and every challenge is an opportunity for growth and transformation.
